About the museum

The Ofterdingen Museumsscheuer goes back to discussions in late summer and autumn 1997: the empty barn at Sattlergasse 12, owned by the municipality, was to take in agricultural tools from municipal and association holdings instead of being demolished. The municipal council decided on the renovation, and a volunteer working group converted the building and furnished it with donations from the public; the museum was presented in 1999.

Later the industrial steam engine of 1940 from the former Stielwerk Albert Hausch & Söhne (a handle manufacturer) was added; it had been out of service since 1969. For it, the municipality acquired the neighboring barn. Since the reopening on July 13, 2002, both barns have formed one structure with more than double the floor space.

The exhibition is arranged across six levels by land, forestry and domestic economy, and by crafts and industry, with woodworking as Ofterdingen's special focus. A living area with kitchen, parlor and bedroom shows village life around 1900. The working group Sattlergasse 12 still runs the house on a volunteer basis and in 2009 received the award "Vorbildliches Heimatmuseum" (Exemplary Local History Museum) from the Arbeitskreis Heimatpflege of the Tübingen administrative district.
