About the museum
The simple half-timbered house in Trautskirchen was built in 1745 by day laborer Lorenz Kohler. It is one of the so-called Tropfhäuser (drip houses), which had only as much land as the rainwater dripping from the roof covered. On February 26, 1875, Hans Böckler was born here; he later became the first chairman of the Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund (German Trade Union Confederation).
Over time the house fell into disrepair and was at times used as a hay store and goat shed. With support from the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung it was restored and opened as a small museum on September 28, 1989. The Braun family has looked after the house for many years.
The exhibition is devoted to the trade union movement since industrialization and shows stations from Böckler's life and work. On display, among other things, is the heavy hammer he used as a young man when he worked in a gold-beating shop.
