About the museum
The museum is located in the former parsonage and deanery of Markt Erlbach, a substantial half-timbered building dating from 1443. In the 1960s the building was close to demolition. The local history society then campaigned for a craft museum, which opened in 1978 as the Rangau-Handwerkermuseum. Back in 1936, a country doctor and local historian had set up a small local history museum in the village, which was looted after the Second World War.
Around 2000, the local history society acquired the listed building from the church and the Pfründestiftung (prebend foundation), and it has since been the sole operator of the house and its collection. From 2008, a severe woodworm infestation in the roof structure made extensive work necessary. After about six years of renovation, the house reopened on July 28, 2019, with an entirely new concept under the name Museum Markt Erlbach – Geschichte und Handwerk.
On three levels, visitors gain insight into the development of crafts, medical care and the eventful history of the village. Well-known local figures, emigration and immigration, and Jewish history are also presented. On the upper floor, workshops show rural trades such as tailoring, shoemaking and watchmaking.
