About the museum
The sculptor Hans Klakow (1899–1993) came from Berlin-Treptow, completed a sculpture apprenticeship from 1913 and, after the First World War, studied at the School of Arts and Crafts and the University of Fine Arts in Berlin, including as a master student of Edwin Scharff. In the late 1920s he acquired a plot of land in Brieselang and built a house and studio there to his own design; it was completed in 1931 and he lived and worked in it until his death.
Klakow initially created mainly architectural sculpture, such as portal figures in Berlin and the children's reliefs at the entrance of the school in Brieselang. After war service and captivity he turned increasingly to small-scale and free-standing sculptures; children, families and animals became his favourite motifs. Bronze groups by him still stand today in Potsdam, Berlin and other cities. In the GDR he headed the sculptors' section of the Potsdam district association for many years.
For the artist's 100th birthday, a permanent exhibition was opened on 3 July 1999 in the listed studio. It shows sculptures, ceramics, reliefs and drawings as well as photographs and documents on his life and work, including the model for the Potsdam bronze group "Kinder mit Reifen" (Children with Hoops). The collection is looked after by a curator, who guides visitors through the house by arrangement.
