About the museum

The museum is in the former water tower of the clinic on the Sachsenberg in Schwerin. The tower replaced an older installation for pumping water from the lake. Today the museum commemorates the history of the clinic, which was opened as the Irren-Heilanstalt Sachsenberg (Sachsenberg asylum) on January 15, 1830 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I.

The neoclassical building, about 180 meters long, was built from 1825 to plans by senior building official (Oberbaurat) Carl Heinrich Wünsch. The first director, the then only 24-year-old Carl Friedrich Flemming, led the institution until 1854 and in 1833 had an eleven-hectare landscape park laid out at Lake Ziegelsee. Occupational therapy made the institution largely self-sufficient; in 1833 the first burials also took place in the cemetery of today's Sachsenberg.

The asylum and care institution later became the Nervenklinik (neurological and psychiatric clinic). Since 1999 the facility has carried the name of its founding director as the Carl-Friedrich-Flemming-Klinik, and today it belongs to the Helios Kliniken group.
