Museum of Silesian regional studies in a historic manor farm in Königswinter-Heisterbacherrott, with the permanent exhibition “Schlesische Erinnerungsorte”.
Uses his letters to follow future US President John Quincy Adams on his journey through Silesia in 1800 and his observations on the land, economy and society.
A selection of landscape watercolors by the Silesian painter Wolf Röhricht (1886–1953), including travel impressions from the south and several views of the Matterhorn.
About the museum
In 1973, a good dozen Silesians founded the association Haus Schlesien to create a place in western Germany for the culture and history of their home region. In 1978 the association acquired the former Fronhof (manor farm) in Heisterbacherrott on the edge of the Siebengebirge hills, whose history goes back to the 12th century and which took on its four-wing layout in the early 19th century; symbolically, it was taken over on St. Hedwig’s Day, October 15. After initial renovations, the house was formally opened in 1981.
Further construction phases up to 1992 added exhibition and event rooms, guest rooms, space for a permanent exhibition and the Eichendorffsaal hall. Since its first major special exhibition in 1985, the house has shown well over 300 exhibitions; from 1992, traveling exhibitions also went to Poland, since 1996 Polish and Czech students have come for exchange seminars, and since 2000 Haus Schlesien has had a presence in Silesia with exhibitions at Leubus Abbey.
The documentation and information center for Silesian regional studies collects, researches and presents Silesia’s cultural heritage; this includes a library of more than 30,000 volumes and a large picture collection. Since July 2022, the permanent exhibition “Schlesische Erinnerungsorte” (Silesian Places of Memory) has led visitors through eight themed houses across about 300 square meters. The center is funded by the federal government, since November 2025 through the Federal Ministry of the Interior. A hotel, restaurant and conference rooms in the manor farm round out the offering.
