About the museum
The Tews-Kate is said to have been built before 1650 and is considered the oldest surviving smokehouse cottage in Eastern Holstein. It originally stood on Godenbergstraße/Marktstraße in Malente and was saved from demolition in 1969 at the initiative of local historian Hanns Zimmermann: pioneers from Plön took it apart and rebuilt it at its present site on Sebastian-Kneipp-Straße. The building is a hall house without chamber bays (kammerfachloses Hallenhaus) with a through-passage hall (Durchgangsdiele); the living quarters were added later.
Over the centuries the cottage changed hands several times. In 1796 it passed to the weaver Carl Hinrich Tews, whose descendants remained in the weaving trade until around 1900, when Ernst Tews founded a nursery here. The house served as a smokehouse until 1967 and was then sold. After the move, the tourism and Kneipp association used the rooms as a local history museum; in 2001 the cottage passed to the municipality of Malente.
Since early 2002, the Heimat- und Verschönerungsverein Malente-Gremsmühlen (local heritage and beautification association) has leased the Tews-Kate for 30 years and runs the museum. The collection shows rural life and household work, including equipment for beekeeping, butter making, carpentry and saddlery; larger agricultural machines stand in a separate building on the grounds.
