About the museum

The Heimat- und Flößermuseum opened in 1992 under municipal management in Calmbach's "Großes Haus am Berg" (Big House on the Hill), a half-timbered building from 1773. Its focus is the history of timber rafting on the Enz. Detailed hand-built raft models and photographs by court photographer Carl Blumenthal showing rafting scenes illustrate this trade.

The exhibition also honors Johann Friedrich Goßweiler (1722–1785), who became wealthy as an entrepreneur during the heyday of the timber trade and rafting. Further rooms show exhibits and photos on traditional forest trades such as charcoal burning, resin tapping and wood processing, as well as crafts, including a complete shoemaker's workshop. One part of the museum is devoted to the history and development of the village of Calmbach.
