About the museum
The house name "Kantebua" goes back to an inn that has been documented since 1789 and was called "Zur Kanne", in dialect "Zur Kante". A few years after 1870, the inn business was given up; later the property fell victim to a fire. In 1896, the present buildings were erected as a double-house complex with separate living and farm sections; the residential house is a so-called Ern- or Küchenflurhaus (kitchen-hall house type).
In the 1980s, the municipality of Marxzell acquired the run-down right-hand part of the property to use it as a museum, and had it restored while largely preserving the original fabric. The village museum opened in July 1992; since September 1991, the Heimatverein Pfaffenrot-Marxzell has looked after the house. The museum documents rural life in the rear Alb valley, above all in Pfaffenrot, until the middle of the 20th century, and sees itself as a museum still under development.
In the garden stands a Schnapshäusle (small schnapps house), where distilling has been carried out again since its official approval for the Abfindungsbrennen in January 2018; there is also a Backhäusle (small bake house) with regular baking days for club members. The association also maintains traditions with event series such as "Advent im Dorfmuseum" (Advent at the village museum).
