About the museum
The Ziegelmuseum in Bad Herrenalb was founded in 2006 and is run by volunteers of the Förderverein Museum Bad Herrenalb e. V. It is located in the middle of the old monastery district, in a shingle-clad half-timbered house that was built in 1860 as the garden house of the spa house (Kurhaus) and belongs to the town.
The core of the exhibition consists of Feierabendziegel – hand-shaped and fired roof tiles that their makers marked with signs, symbols, sayings or protective motifs. They tell of everyday life, superstition and the earnings of the tile makers. Most of the outstanding pieces come from the collection of the expert Edmund Bernt (1952–2016) of Weissach-Flacht, who selected the tiles together with the friends' association and also wrote the accompanying texts on the history of the roof, the tiles and tile-making.
The collection is supplemented by tiles from the tile works of the Herrenalb Cistercian monastery; some of them, dated to 1437, are among the earliest dated roof tiles of this kind. Alongside the permanent exhibition, the roughly 200 square meters offer room for smaller temporary exhibitions and a creative area for hands-on activities. The museum reopened in 2022 after modernization.
