About the museum
The Alte Ruthemühle in Recke-Steinbeck is a former water mill with two water wheels and three grinding stones; it was first mentioned in writing in 1526. The municipality of Recke acquired the site in 1986, and in 1989 it was opened to the public as the Heimat- und Korbmuseum. The site is run jointly with the Heimatverein Recke (local heritage association), which holds many of its activities here.
The museum shows milling technology and a sawmill, as well as regional themes such as the Tödden (traveling merchants) and a wooden clog and shoemaker's workshop. Basketry is at the heart of it: the only basket museum in the Tecklenburg region presents materials, tools, working techniques and baskets from the Münsterland, the Osnabrück area and other regions, ranging from artistic pieces to work baskets.
Another collection is devoted to the coal mining in Recke, which is over 500 years old, with mine galleries (Stollen), mining tools, maps and pictures. Over time, a bakehouse, a beehouse, a carriage house and a Heimathaus were added; at events, fresh bread is baked in the bakehouse, and there is a café.
