About the museum

The Draiflessen Collection was founded in 2009 by the Brenninkmeijer business family in Mettingen, their Westphalian place of origin. On a former production site, a museum building with exhibition space meeting international standards, as well as archive and storage rooms, was built alongside a conference centre.

The name takes up the secret language of the Tüötten, those Westphalian linen traders who travelled through Germany and Northern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries and to whom the ancestors of the founding family belonged. The two parts of the word stand for concepts such as trade, Trinity, flax and home, and thus refer to the family's origins, faith and entrepreneurship.

The museum has no permanent exhibition. In the Main Space, changing exhibitions with artworks and international loans are on display; the Studiensaal shows book art and graphics from the Liberna Collection, with a focus on the 15th to 17th centuries; and DAS Forum offers insight into the study of family businesses through archive and collection. An extensive education programme with guided tours, workshops and excursions accompanies the exhibitions.
