About the museum
The museum occupies the old school building from 1872, which was expanded in 1900. It is run by the association Heimat- und Schulmuseum Himmelpforten, which is financed by membership dues and donations. The exhibits are spread over two floors of the house and two outbuildings in the yard.
One focus is school history: a classroom from around 1930, with wall charts, slates, class photos, and old textbooks, shows how people learned in the past. On request, groups can experience a lesson as it was about 120 years ago. The museum also covers local history, including the Porta Coeli monastery, which gave the village its name.
In the "Museum zum Anfassen" (hands-on museum), rural life and crafts come alive, for example in an old forge, a shoemaker's workshop, a wheelwright's shop, a cooper's workshop, and a kitchen with a brick stove. The association is gradually digitizing its collection, regularly presents a "Ding des Monats" (object of the month), and offers a virtual tour.
