Special exhibition
Special exhibition of tractors and agricultural machinery from the collection of Bernd Downar; opened in summer 2026.
The Heimathaus is housed in a former watermill built in 1704 in the Krähgarten of the former Schladen castle. As part of the rationalisation of mills in the Braunschweig region, it was shut down in 1957. In 1966 the municipality, under municipal director Adolf Reinecke, converted the building for museum use, and in 1978 the newly founded Förderkreis took over its voluntary management.
The half-timbered building presents evidence of the region in separate areas. Archaeological finds document some 7,000 years of settlement, from the Neolithic through the Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages to the Middle Ages; the Ottonian period with the Kaiserpfalz Werla (imperial palace) is particularly highlighted. Archaeology is one of the museum’s main focuses: one exhibition introduces the people buried in the Beuchte burial ground and shows a reconstructed warrior’s grave. Another area is devoted to living and working around 1900, with a miller’s living room, kitchen and wash house, musical instruments, and the history of clubs and the church. This area in particular is vivid for children; in some places visitors may also touch objects.
A small exhibition commemorates the royal architect Leo von Klenze, who came from Schladen; other personalities from the region are presented as well. The Förderkreis also organises special exhibitions, readings and talks, which it announces on its website.
Admission is free.
