About the museum
Vienenburg station in the northern Harz foreland belongs to the first railway line of the Duchy of Brunswick, which opened as far as Bad Harzburg in 1838. Its reception building, constructed between 1838 and 1840, is among the oldest surviving in Germany and is listed together with the adjoining Kaisersaal.
In the station building and on the former storage and shunting tracks to the north-east, the Verein zur Förderung des Eisenbahnmuseums Vienenburg (VEV e.V.) set up its museum. Besides the exhibition rooms, it uses former railway buildings and a section of track of the former "Harzburger Seite", on which stand historic goods, service and works wagons as well as a cable excavator. In 2025, a small diesel locomotive from Peine was added, which the association has been restoring externally since then.
The association also looks after a historic passenger train and a class 52 steam locomotive, with which it organises special trips under the name "Historische Eisenbahn Vienenburg".
