About the museum

The house on Damm in Schladen is the family home of the architect and painter Leo von Klenze. His father, Gotthelf Friedrich Klenze, had become bailiff (Amtmann) of Schladen in 1782 and had a handsome residence built on the street. While it was under construction the family lived in nearby Buchladen, where Leopold was born in the night of 28 to 29 February 1784. Once the house was completed in 1784 he spent his early childhood there, until the family moved to the Heißum estate in 1791. Klenze later rose to become court architect in Munich and designed, among other buildings, the Alte Pinakothek, the Walhalla near Regensburg and the New Hermitage in St Petersburg.

After the Klenzes left, the house was sold; in 1816 the merchant Gottfried Oppermann set up a pharmacy in it. Under a succession of pharmacists, what later became the Hirsch-Apotheke remained in the building until 2014 – for almost two centuries.

In 2016 a friends' association was founded on the initiative of Henning Schacht to commemorate Klenze in his family home. With the support of the owner it has used almost the entire ground floor since 2017 and has refurbished the rooms through volunteer work. On 28 February 2023, Klenze's 239th birthday, the museum opened in the former sales room of the pharmacy – according to the association, the first museum dedicated to the master builder. It traces his life with a family tree, shows drawings as well as images of his buildings and paintings and, as a special piece, a silver jug belonging to the family; a large-format view of the Walhalla dominates the room. Since April 2025 the pharmacy's laboratory and storeroom have been on show as a pharmacy museum. The house is also a cultural meeting place with talks, readings, a literary circle, games afternoons and summer festivals in the large garden.
