About the museum
The Heimatverein (local heritage society) of Neuhardenberg was founded on July 18, 1991. Among its first goals was a village museum: in 1997 the society saved the last residential house with visible half-timbering and converted it into a Heimathaus. Today it volunteers to run the Dorfmuseum Alte Schule, which also includes an orchard meadow.
The building is a Prussian schoolhouse from around 1905, erected next to the school building from 1867, which had become too small (today the tourist information office). It served as a school until 1975 and then for several decades as an after-school center for the lower grades. In 1998 the municipal council decided to rent rooms to the Heimatverein for a village museum; since 1999 visitors have been welcomed here.
On display are old furniture, household objects and toys, as well as evidence of local history from Quilitz through Marxwalde to Neuhardenberg. Old farm tools stand in the courtyard. Alongside the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions change every year, and once a year the society celebrates the Bollenfüßlerfest.
