About the museum
Kunersdorf, then spelled Cunersdorf, was a gathering place for educated society in the Mark Brandenburg around 1800. On the estate, with its palace built in 1771–1774, Henriette Charlotte von Itzenplitz developed a "Musenhof" (court of the muses) on the model of the Berlin salons, which included a library of around 30,000 volumes. The palace and patronage church were destroyed on April 17, 1945 and later demolished.
In summer 1813, the poet and naturalist Adelbert von Chamisso stayed as a guest on the estate. Here he wrote his tale "Peter Schlemihl's Wondrous History" about the man without a shadow. The Förderverein Kunersdorfer Musenhof e. V. (friends' association) set out to commemorate this period and the "Frauen von Friedland", and financed a museum with support from donors and a crowdfunding campaign.
The Chamisso Museum opened on April 13, 2019 and is considered the first museum dedicated to the poet. Spread across five rooms, it presents his life and work: the Schlemihl material with over 100 editions, including a first edition from 1814, and Chamisso's work as a botanist on the Rurik expedition, a circumnavigation of the globe from 1815 to 1818. The house is run by the friends' association and offers guided tours as well as readings and salon talks.
