About the museum

Until 1815 the village was called Quilitz. Frederick William III gave the fief together with the palace to his chancellor Karl August von Hardenberg, who moved in in 1815; since then the village has been called Neu-Hardenberg. Karl Friedrich Schinkel remodeled the palace in the early 19th century, while Peter Joseph Lenné and Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau shaped the landscape park. The Schinkel Church also belongs to the classicist ensemble.

In the 20th century the palace, under Carl-Hans Count von Hardenberg, became a meeting place for conspirators of July 20, 1944; the family was expropriated afterwards. In the GDR the village was called Marxwalde. In 1997 the German Savings Banks and Giro Association acquired the complex, which was renovated by 2001 and supplemented with new buildings for a hotel, gastronomy, events and exhibitions. The Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg, founded in 2001, has run the ensemble and its programme ever since; it was officially opened on May 8, 2002.

The permanent exhibition "Schloss Neuhardenberg. Ein Ortstermin" in the exhibition hall was redesigned in 2019. Using a timeline, media installations, interviews with contemporary witnesses and selected exhibits, it traces the history of the palace, the Hardenberg family and the village. In addition, on Sundays from April to October the first floor of the palace can be visited, where part of the earlier early classicist-baroque furnishings has been preserved.
