About the museum

The Heimathaus on Lienener Damm is a Westphalian half-timbered cottage (Kotten) built around 1790 and protected as a listed monument since 1988. The Poggenburg family lived here for generations; they are mentioned in Ostbevern as early as the late 15th century. In 1862 Johannes Poggenburg was born in the house; he was Bishop of Münster from 1913 to 1933.

After the family moved out, the building served for about four decades only as a barn and storeroom and fell increasingly into disrepair. In 1995 the family handed the house over to the Heimatverein Ostbevern, newly founded in 1987, for the symbolic price of one mark. In the following years, club members and many volunteer helpers converted the cottage with considerable effort, before the Heimathaus opened in May 2001.

The museum shows how people in the countryside once lived and worked. It includes a forge, a cobbler's, a carpenter's and a tailor's workshop, dairy farming equipment and a schoolroom from the period between 1930 and 1950. A separate room commemorates Bishop Poggenburg with numerous exhibits. In addition, the local history society uses the house for Low German evenings, readings and demonstrations, and the municipal registry office offers wedding ceremonies in the fireplace room.
