About the museum
The foundation was laid by the Feuerwehr-Oldtimerfreunde Jever, an association that restored historic fire engines on a voluntary basis. In 2001, the first vehicle they got back into shape was a 1958 LF 16 fire-fighting group vehicle that had previously served the Jever Volunteer Fire Brigade for decades. The museum grew out of this collection.
It is housed in the former goods shed of the Jever station complex, a listed building from 1908 that the members renovated in many hours of voluntary work. In 2011 the Oldenburg Fire Brigade Association took over the building and has since run it as its own department; in the same year an extension for the vehicles was completed. In recent years, with state and foundation funding, a new heating system, work on the facade, windows and gutters, and new media technology followed, among other things.
The exhibition shows firefighting in its full breadth, from uniforms and helmets through small firefighting equipment and breathing apparatus to the wooden turntable ladder. The core of the collection is fire engines from the period between 1937 and 1971. A particular focus is on alerting: on tours, working radio and signalling technology is demonstrated, from the fire horn to digital alerting.
