About the museum
The idea of showing the history of the aviation town of Wittmund and its airfield Wittmundhafen in a museum existed as early as the early 1990s. A first step came in 1998 with a small exhibition of models by the town archivist Johannes Mennen in Ardorf, which ended after five years for personnel reasons. From 2006 contact was established with Robert von Zeppelin, a great-nephew of the airship pioneer, who promised his support.
The breakthrough came through Friedrich Janssen, who bought the building on Drostenstraße and made it available to the association founded in 2013. After conversion and renovation by volunteers, the museum opened in June 2015, about a year before the airfield's 100th anniversary.
The collection ranges from zeppelins and bicycles with auxiliary motors to historic printing presses and military aviation at the Wittmund site. Among other things, a detailed model of the first German aircraft carrier is on display. The house is financed through donations, membership fees and admission charges.
