About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Ahlem is housed in the Bürgergemeinschaftshaus on Wunstorfer Landstraße, the former town hall of the municipality of Ahlem, which was independent until 1974 and then incorporated into Hanover. It is run by the Willy-Spahn-Park-Verein.
The exhibition tells the story of the place from fossils of the area and excavation finds from the Migration Period up to the present day. One focus is industrialisation, which greatly changed the farming village – above all asphalt mining in the Ahlem pits. Furnished rooms such as a farmer's parlour, a bourgeois living room of the late 19th century and the living kitchen of a working-class household show everyday life in different eras.
Further topics are the strong population growth, the influx of refugees and migrants, and the consequences of incorporation into the city. One room commemorates Pastor Jacobus Sackmann from Limmer, another area the former Großkraftwerk Hannover power station.
