About the museum

The Rosebusch Verlassenschaften are the joint life's work of the artist couple Almut and Hans-Jürgen Breuste. From 1997 the two collected discarded industrial products – belts, hoses, mats, containers, cots, shoes and much more, a large part of it from the former Continental plant in Limmer. In the empty turbine hall of a former PreussenElektra power station on the Stichkanal canal in Ahlem, they arranged the material into expansive installations and combined it with paintings of shadowy human figures.

Shortly after Hans-Jürgen Breuste's death, the site was opened to the public for the first time in 2012. Since then Almut Breuste has continued the work, supported by a nonprofit association. The name refers to the address on Rosenbuschweg and to the Austrian legal term Verlassenschaft, meaning an estate left behind.

Part of the total work of art is the room installation "Objekt Litzmannstadt", with well over 2,000 hospital cots, photographs of forced laborers, and letters and name lists of deportees; it commemorates the ghetto in Łódź and is owned by the State of Lower Saxony. The hall also serves as an out-of-school learning venue and a stage for readings, concerts and theater. In 2019 the project received the "Pro Visio" culture prize of the Stiftung Kulturregion Hannover.
