About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Allendorf (Lumda) is housed in the Rostschule, a half-timbered house from 1731 directly next to the Protestant town church. It is run by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Allendorf (Lumda) (local heritage and transport society), which celebrated the museum's 25th anniversary in 2003 and presented the museum extension on that occasion.
The collection shows the rural and village life of a small Upper Hessian town and the folk culture of the Lumda valley: an extensive collection of Dreihäuser stoneware, a costume room with everyday and Sunday dress of the Lumda valley as well as Marburg Protestant costume, and a Tante-Emma corner shop. The museum complex also includes the town tower (Stadtturm) from 1370 and the 1950s house at Kirchstraße 15, where postwar domestic culture is furnished to look at and touch.
In 2013 the museum cellar opened as an extension; it serves as a meeting place for events, courses, lectures and readings. Since 2017 a large tin toy collection on permanent loan has complemented the 1950s house.
