About the museum
The transformer tower on the Elsenberg was built in 1911 and supplied the formerly independent village of Damm with electricity from 1912. When the grid operator began moving overhead lines underground from 2005, the stations became redundant and many towers faced demolition. The ox head painted by local residents, the emblem of the local shooting club (Schützenverein), made the building a landmark and helped to preserve it.
In 2009, residents of Damm founded the Turmverein (tower association), bought the tower and set up the electricity museum in it, which opened at the end of May 2011. It considers itself the smallest electricity museum in the world and is run exclusively by volunteers.
On two levels, display cases and shelves show hundreds of everyday objects from the early days of electrification, including an illuminated darning mushroom, curling irons, voltage testers, irons and razors. Much of it may be touched, and the club members tell the stories behind the pieces. There is an exchange of exhibits with the Strommuseum in Recklinghausen.
