About the museum
The house at Steintorstraße 17 was built in the years after 1566, according to the dating of the oak beams used in its construction, and is the oldest surviving residential building in the Schermbeck town center. It originally served a family of farmer-burghers or craftsmen as home and workplace, and has been on the municipal list of listed buildings since April 1984.
In September 1985 the half-timbering was dismantled. After extensive work, the mayor handed over the key to the new local history museum to the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein (local heritage and history association) in December 1987. The association has looked after the house on a volunteer basis to this day and keeps expanding the collection.
The permanent exhibition shows objects from trades, agriculture and households and brings to life the furnishing of an old Schermbeck home, including a wedding floor (Hochzeitsboden). Other focal points are pottery and brick-making, the history of the municipality and that of the former Jewish community. In front of the museum stands the last of the eleven public water pumps once found in the municipality.
