About the museum
The building in Unterkessach, today a district of Widdern, was built as a village forge in 1898. Its origins as a museum go back to the 1960s; in summer 1991 the local history museum was officially opened. It is thus one of the oldest local history museums in the former Altkreis Buchen (district).
The museum is spread over three floors. From the forecourt, where horses were once shod, visitors enter the small, still fully furnished village forge on the first floor. The living area is furnished with original furniture: living and bedrooms, the kitchen and the remains of a privy. On the attic floor hang numerous tools, above all hammers and pincers in many shapes and sizes.
Visits are offered as guided tours by the village head (Ortsvorsteher) of Unterkessach and give insight into the earlier way of life and work.
