About the museum

The Möckmühl local history museum has been housed since 1988 in a 17th-century half-timbered house on Kirchplatz. It belongs to the town of Möckmühl; visits are arranged through the Heimatkundlicher Arbeitskreis (HAK, local history working group).

The permanent exhibition begins with geology: fossils, mainly from the Muschelkalk (shell limestone), show the region's geological history. Excavation finds from Möckmühl and the surrounding area document early history, including a Bronze Age sword from the Urnfield period and finds from the Roman era. Numerous objects from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, along with photographs, illustrate the town's history.

Personalities also have their place, especially Louise Franckh, the sister of Friedrich Schiller, who lived in Möckmühl from 1805 to 1836. In addition there are old photographs, documents from school and club life, household and craft tools, flax processing and agricultural equipment.
