About the museum

The synagogue in the center of Sennfeld was built in 1835/36 and served the Jewish community for over 100 years as a place of learning, prayer and gathering. The building has survived almost unchanged on the outside and is therefore one of the few synagogues in the Neckar-Odenwald district that were neither destroyed nor demolished.

After the November pogrom of 1938 and the deportation of Baden's Jews to Gurs in 1940, the building was used in various ways, including as a cinema, a Catholic church, a refugee shelter, and as a rehearsal room and gymnasium. Today the former synagogue is a memorial to the Jewish communities of Sennfeld, Adelsheim and Korb. The town of Adelsheim is the sponsoring body.

In the building, the Sennfeld local history museum shows documents and objects on village history; the village archive is also located here. Particularly notable are the two well-preserved ritual baths (mikvahs) from 1839 and 1868/69, which were discovered during renovations in the 1990s. In the memorial room, objects and documents, including finds from the Genizah recovered in 2009, recall the former Jewish residents. The Jewish cemetery, used from 1884 to 1939, lies in a wooded area at the edge of the village.
