On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the self-governing municipality, the exhibition in the Heimatmuseum looks back at selected stages of its development. Open on Thursdays, 14:00–17:00.
About the museum
Gettorf already had a local history museum in the 1930s: head teacher Trede set it up with pupils in a classroom, and the local historian August Seidel contributed loans. During the war the collection had to be cleared out and stored away, and much was lost. In January 1996 a new local history museum was set up under the direction of the Heimat- und Mühlenverein (local heritage and mill association).
The present sponsoring association, the Gettorfer Windmühlen- und Kulturverein (Gettorf windmill and cultural association), has its roots in the Förderverein (friends' association) for the preservation of the Gettorf mill, founded in 1977. The mill was restored by 1984; its upper floors house the archive, a meeting room and rooms for events. In early 2018 the museum was extended by an annex that houses the textile room with clothing, linen and a dowry chest.
The collection shows crafts, agriculture, home and kitchen of the region. Special features include the Seidel room with household goods of the 19th century, a fully equipped shoemaker's workshop, a loom from 1869 and a cupboard from around 1750 with Kellinghusen faience. There is also a prehistoric and early historic collection, a section on children's games of earlier times, and in the barn old tools as well as carriages of the Gettorf firm Broocks from around 1925.
