About the museum
Mitterfels Castle was built at the end of the 12th century by the Counts of Bogen. Around 1280 the Bavarian dukes made it the seat of a Pflegamt and Landgericht (district administration and district court), so Mitterfels remained the center of justice and administration in the region for centuries. The Pflegamt existed until 1799, the Landgericht until 1879, and the Amtsgericht (local court) that followed until 1973.
At the end of 1982 the castle and museum were combined into one unit. The collector Josef Brembeck and the market town of Mitterfels brought the rich store of folk heritage and implements of the Vorderer Bayerischen Wald into the former prison wing, which had been built in the northwest bailey in the 18th century.
On display are, among other things, farm implements, a horse-drawn fire pump, two clock rooms with rarities, as well as an original prison cell, a dark tower dungeon and the prisoners' courtyard in the bailey. On the first floor one entire room is devoted to childhood in the Bavarian Forest. The museum is run by the Burgmuseumsverein Mitterfels e.V. (castle museum association).
