About the museum
The Schlesisches Schaufenster is run by the "Stiftung Schlesien.Bayern", which was founded by the Bavarian state association of the Landsmannschaft Schlesien (Silesian expellee association). It aims to keep the culture and history of Silesia alive, to commemorate expulsion, and to show the contribution Silesians made to rebuilding Bavaria after the war. In Straubing alone, more than 5,000 Silesians found a new home after 1945.
The exhibition occupies four large rooms in the Herzogsschloss (Ducal Palace) on the Danube. All exhibits were provided by Silesians; according to the museum, nothing was purchased. Space is limited, so the museum deliberately sees itself as a rotating "Schaufenster" (showcase) that cannot display every piece it holds.
The tour begins with maps showing Silesia's location and moves from medieval eastward settlement to flight and expulsion, with original flight luggage, traditional costumes, and customs. It presents the economy and cultural achievements (glass, porcelain, linen, mining, literature, Nobel Prize winners) and devotes the last room to Silesians in Bavaria and the Landsmannschaft.
