About the museum

Out of fear that local history and folk traditions might be sold off or unknowingly destroyed, Ludwig Bauer began collecting everyday objects as early as the 1960s. In 1974 the first village museum was set up in a grain store dating from 1812, but the growing collection of household items, tools, small farm implements, and steam and diesel engines soon outgrew the space.

In 1995 Bauer presented the project for a new museum barn. Members of the Bayerischer Waldverein, Bernried section, built it with timber donations and more than 2,000 hours of work on a plot provided by the municipality; the museum was officially handed over in 1999. In 2002 the partly renovated grain box was added, and in 2003 an ice-stock hall, creating an enclosed site.

Around 400 square meters display some 2,000 objects from farming and crafts: old steam and fuel engines, a reconstructed forge, workshops of extinct trades such as wheelwright, cooper and maker of reckoning tools, and the old tower clock of the parish church with its chiming mechanism. Many devices still work and are demonstrated in operation; the museum also serves school classes for local heritage lessons.
