About the museum
The museum was founded by the Steinhorst/Sandesneben local group of the Heimatbund und Geschichtsverein Herzogtum Lauenburg (regional heritage and history association). About 35 volunteers from crafts, housekeeping, administration and academia run it; their goal is to preserve and vividly convey the knowledge, skills and tools of earlier generations.
The collection is housed in the straw and fodder store of the former cowshed of a district estate. The listed building, about 60 meters long, is a through-barn built between 1876 and 1879, into which horse-drawn carts could be driven via ramps at both ends. Across roughly 1,700 square meters, restored equipment and machines from forestry, agriculture, housekeeping and many crafts are on display, some still in working order.
Additional displays include a fully furnished general store, a classroom, a printing and bookbinding workshop, a pharmacy, a hair salon, a village pub, and collections of old radios, televisions, telephones and cameras. The museum is funded entirely by donations.
