About the museum
The German Shooting Federation (DSB) had a museum of its own early on: a collection began to take shape in Nuremberg from 1897, the founding of a German Shooting Museum was decided in 1903, and the first exhibition opened in 1907. In the 1920s it moved with the federation's offices into the Pickerthaus in Nuremberg's old town. After the Nazis dissolved the federation, the collection was plundered in 1938, and most of the holdings burned during the bombing of Nuremberg in January 1945.
The present museum opened in May 2004 in the west wing of Callenberg Castle in the Coburg district of Beiersdorf. The location was chosen deliberately: Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, whose summer residence was Callenberg, was one of the founders of the Shooting Federation in 1861.
Over roughly 400 square metres, a largely chronological tour leads from Stone Age hunters and ancient heroes through the medieval town shooting guilds, bird and target shooting, to the German Federal Shooting Festivals of the 19th century. Further sections deal with shooting clubs during the Nazi era, the postwar associations, successes in Olympic shooting and women's competitive shooting. A hands-on station invites visitors to try things out; special exhibitions complement the permanent display.
