About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Breckerfeld is run by the association Stadtmuseum Breckerfeld e.V. (registered association). It grew out of a local history working group founded in 1984; in 1985 a first museum room opened in the attic of a house on Frankfurter Straße. In 1991 the association took its current name.
In 1993 the town bought a farrier's forge with an adjoining residence, where the blacksmith Fritz Schmidt had worked until 1993. In 1994 the town council decided to turn both buildings into a museum; in 1995/96 the heritage association converted them. In January 1996 the museum moved into its new premises at Museumsgasse 3, and in summer 1996 it opened with an exhibition on Breckerfeld's traditional clubs for the town's 600th anniversary.
The permanent exhibition consists mostly of loans and presents the history of the Hanseatic town; models recall landmarks such as the telegraph station, the tower windmill, and the Hohenzollern Tower. In addition there are temporary exhibitions as well as readings and concerts by the "Kulturschmiede" (Culture Forge). Since 2014, the museum has also been a venue for civil marriage ceremonies.
The museum sees itself as a living place meant to keep citizens' interest in their town's past alive.
