About the museum

The hunting museum goes back to an initiative of the Hegering Schalksmühle-Hülscheid, the hunters' association of the two municipalities in the Märkischer Kreis. After about two years of preparation, the museum opened in October 2004.

It is housed in rooms of the former Vedder switch factory in the Asenbach district, which is now used as a commercial park. For the museum, the rooms were thoroughly renovated and prepared as roughly 350 square meters of exhibition space.

Most of the collection comes from the estates of hunters from the region. On display are mounted specimens of local game and bird species – including species such as hazel grouse and gray partridge, which hardly occur in the area anymore –, an extensive series of roe deer antlers, historic hunting furniture, traps, hunting literature, and pictures with hunting motifs. The volunteer-run museum explicitly sees itself not only as a museum for hunters but also as a place of learning for kindergartens and schools.
