About the museum

The building at Hauptstraße 5 was erected in 1883 as the municipal poorhouse, financed from surpluses of the local savings bank. The ground floor provided accommodation for the poor-relief warden and up to four inmates or orphans. After the district of Neuhaus (Oste) took over poor relief in 1930, the building was at the municipality's free disposal and was used as a town hall from 1934. At times it also housed a nursing station and an emergency classroom of the elementary school.

The local history museum with its attached local history archive goes back to the local heritage officer and chronicler Heinz Behrens. Since 1981 it has occupied the upper floor and attic of the building. It shows the development of the village through numerous everyday objects, souvenirs of seamen from around the world and a weapons collection, the oldest pieces of which date back to the Thirty Years' War.

On the ground floor is the archive with records going back to the 17th century, plus a reading room with chronicles and local history literature. In the neighboring gallery house (Hauptstraße 3), a former shooting hall and residence, several exhibitions are held each year. The grounds also include a farmhouse garden with flowers and herbs typical of the region. The museum is run by the Heimat- und Kulturverein "De Osten Strom" Geversdorf e. V.
