About the museum
The Dringenberg hilltop castle above the Öse valley was built between 1318 and 1323 under Paderborn Prince-Bishop Bernhard V. zur Lippe; in 1323 the village received town rights. Prince-Bishop Simon III. zur Lippe had the complex extensively rebuilt in 1498/99. Until the 19th century it served as a summer residence of the Paderborn bishops.
The Heimatverein Dringenberg (local heritage association), revived in 1977 as a department of the Eggegebirgsverein, has been active in the castle as a registered association since 1983. After renovation of the castle chapel, which now serves as the civil wedding room of the town of Bad Driburg, building work followed on the south and east wings until 2006. The result is a volunteer-run museum with more than 650 square meters of exhibition space.
The tour includes the local heritage rooms and an old office with insights into living and working around 1900, the "Raum der Geschichte" (room of history), a shoemaker's workshop and a general store, the vaulted cellar as the oldest part of the building, and a turning workshop. Natural history rooms display local woods with short films, bird specimens with playable calls, nests, and butterfly and beetle collections. Changing art exhibitions and events take place in the knights' halls and the vaulted cellar; a castle well about 40 meters deep in the inner courtyard is one of the sights.
