About the museum

The brick building at Wasserstraße 6 was built in 1908 by the Jewish merchant Sally Ikenberg for his rural trade business. In the 1930s, Jewish assets were liquidated; the Bäuerliche Bezugs- und Absatzgenossenschaft (farmers' supply and sales cooperative) took over the house, where farmers delivered grain and traded seed, fertilizer, potatoes and coal. At the end of the 1980s, the building no longer met the requirements, and it was cleared at the beginning of the 1990s.

The Heimatverein Nieheim (Nieheim Local Heritage Association), founded in 1995, bought the house in 1998. With more than 7,000 hours of volunteer work, help from the town and the EU, and donations, it was restored so that at least the basement could be used for the Käsemarkt (cheese market) in 2000. Traces of the rural trade, such as the bucket elevator, a sack-filling system and a seed-dressing drum, can still be seen.

Today, the "Museum im Kornhaus" (Museum in the Grain House) presents the theme of sacks in many facets: from the smallest mail sack to the hop sack, from the straw mattress to the bagpipe and the church collection bag. There is also an old sack-mending workshop, two sack-beating machines and a small sack printing workshop.
