Deutsches Käsemuseum

Museum on the production and cultural history of cheese in the "cheese town" of Nieheim, open on seasonal Sundays and for groups.

Opening hoursAdmission from €7.50

About the museum

The Deutsches Käsemuseum (German Cheese Museum) was part of the Westfalen Culinarium, a museum ensemble opened in Nieheim in 2006 in six converted farmer-townsmen's houses on Lange Straße. Under one roof it presented museums on cheese, bread, ham, and beer; the project, funded with EU money, received the German Tourism Award in the year it was founded.

In 2019 the Culinarium was dissolved as a group: the bread and ham museums closed, and the cheese museum remained under the management of the town of Nieheim. Today, together with the Nieheimer Biermuseum der Brauzunft and the Sackmuseum of the local history association, it forms the Nieheimer Museumslandschaft with shared admission.

The exhibition in two reconstructed half-timbered houses explains how cheese is made, what distinguishes raw-milk cheese, and why Nieheim, with its traditional Nieheimer Magermilchkäse (skim milk cheese) and the large cheese market, is regarded as a cheese town. Among other things, an early Nieheim cheese kitchen with historic tools can be seen. The rooms are also rented out for celebrations and events.
