About the museum
Dahlenburg teacher Louis Baumgarten founded the museum in 1911. Since 1928 it has been housed in the former Laurentius chapel, which was built around 1250 as the chapel of Dahlenburg Castle and is dated between Romanesque and Gothic. Later it served as the church of the surrounding rural communities, was used as a horse stable by Napoleonic troops in 1813, and then stood empty for a long time. In 1928 the museum association restored the building with the help of numerous donors; the glass windows installed then are still preserved today.
One focus of the exhibition is shoemaking: around 1850, 32 shoemakers in the town made their living, which is why Dahlenburg was nicknamed "Schusterburg" (Shoemakers' Castle). A shoemaker's room is set up on the ground floor. A second focus is the battle at the Göhrde on September 16, 1813, shown in a diorama with 1,500 hand-painted tin soldiers and matching finds.
In addition, there are exhibits on prehistory and early history, village associations, household and kitchen utensils, and craft and farm tools. The museum association also organizes a volunteer museum café, concerts, flea markets, and an open-air cinema.
