About the museum

The Erste Deutsche Fliesenmuseum came about on the initiative of tile enthusiasts and former employees of the Boizenburg tile factory. In 1995 the supporting association was founded, and in 1998 the museum opened in a house in the middle of Boizenburg's old town. Building ceramicist and artist Lothar Scholz was decisively involved; the museum is named after him, and an exhibition of its own is dedicated to his life's work.

The focus is on industrially produced tiles from about 1880 to 1930 in the styles of Historicism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. A separate section shows products of the Boizenburger Plattenfabrik, founded in 1903; it is based on the collections of tile historian Ulrich Hamburg and is on loan from savings bank foundations.

Since 2012 the museum has also presented about 500 individual tiles and tile pictures from the 17th to 19th centuries, mostly from the Netherlands, Spain, England and Germany, on permanent loan from the Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung. A demonstration workshop explains the raw materials, tools and decoration methods of tile making.

The museum is still run exclusively by volunteers. The museum includes a specialist library on tile art, and every year collectors meet at the international tile fair.
