Heimatmuseum Boizenburg
Local history museum in the Bürgerhaus on the market square: life on the Elbe, fishing, shipbuilding, floods, and Boizenburg as a border town – free admission.
About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Boizenburg was founded in 1935 at the suggestion of the local art association and history-minded citizens. Until the end of World War II it was run by the teacher Hans Vick, who researched and collected local history with great enthusiasm.
After a varied history, the collections have been on display since October 2005 in the listed Bürgerhaus at Markt 1. The building is attributed to Georg Adolf Demmler, the Schwerin court architect.
The exhibition sheds light on everyday life in a small town on the river: fishing, shipbuilding at the Elbe shipyard, trade, floods and flood protection, and the decades as a border town on the inner German border. It also presents the working lives and life stories of well-known townspeople, such as the democrat Ludwig Reinhard. Exhibits include a Biedermeier living room, a city model, a model of the Elbe shipyard, and archaeological finds up to a Bronze Age sword.
The Elbbergmuseum in the Vier district is an annex; it commemorates the former Boizenburg concentration camp subcamp and the inner German border. Special exhibitions, lectures, and workshops for children and school classes round out the offerings.
