About the museum

The roots of the museum go back to Bessarabia: in the village of Sarata a small cultural-history museum of the German colonists existed from 1922 until the resettlement of the German population in 1940.

After the Second World War the museum was re-established in Stuttgart on 25 May 1952. Since 1963 it has been housed in the House of the Bessarabian Germans on Florianstraße, a six-storey building erected in 1960 in Stuttgart-Ost, which is also the seat and information centre of the Bessarabian German Association.

With the accession of the Dobruja German Landsmannschaft in 2009, its collection was added; it was shown as a separate department from 2016 to 2021 and has since been integrated into the permanent exhibition.

The permanent exhibition on the second floor presents around 1,000 objects on the history of settlement from 1814, on farming life on the Black Sea and on the Nazi era – including traditional costumes, weaving, models, tools and paintings. Special exhibitions are shown in the basement; archives, a photo archive and a library serve family and genealogical research.
