About the museum
The Wertingen local history museum goes back to senior teacher Franz Xaver Burghart, who founded it in the 1920s. At first the collection was housed in the Stadtstadel (town barn), an annex of the old town hall, and was later stored in the former elementary school. In 1975 it moved into the renovated Wertingen Schloss.
The palace complex, dating from the 14th to the 17th century, was once inhabited by the Langenmantel and Pappenheimer families and today houses the town hall and the seat of the administrative community. The holdings of the local history museum can be seen in the basement and in the corridors of the building.
The collection includes finds from the Neolithic onward, town history with crafts and guilds (such as a 17th-century loom), rural tools, painted furniture, costumes and sacred art, applied arts, and weapons and equipment from the Napoleonic era to the Second World War. In the entrance area, a timeline with around 40 objects in 30 display cases runs from 15,000 BCE to the present.
