About the museum

The Schwäbisches Ofenmuseum (Swabian Stove Museum) goes back to the collection of Josef Lutz, a native of Wertingen. From 1969 onward he gathered cast-iron stoves as well as ironworks records such as company chronicles, pattern books and documents on manufacture and sales. His archive comprises more than 1,000 titles; Lutz is regarded as a well-informed stove historian.

The museum is housed on the premises of Alois Denzel KG, a timber company whose owning family acts as curator and sponsor: for the company, the interplay of wood and iron as fuel and stove material is a natural fit. Organizationally, the museum is run by the town of Wertingen.

The collection displays around 160 stoves from three centuries and gives insight into the development of heating and cooking options, domestic culture in earlier times, the transition from craft to industrial production, stylistic development and the sales of the ironworks.
