About the museum
From collections and donations by citizens interested in local history, a local history museum for the Eisenach Oberland was founded in 1932 in Dermbach Palace. After the Second World War the holdings had to be moved out; only in 1959 could the museum be set up again in an old villa.
In 1997 it moved into an 18th-century half-timbered house in the old village center next to the Protestant church. Since then it has shown, on two floors, selected focal points of the cultural and social history of the Thuringian Rhön; the building also houses the town's tourist information office.
Themes include the eventful history of the Amt Dermbach, the Peasants' War in the Vorderrhön, the cork processing typical of Dermbach, small industrial businesses along the Feldabahn railway opened in 1880, the legendary figure of the robber Rhönpaulus, and the clashes between Prussia and Bavaria in 1866. In addition there are traditional costumes, furniture, agricultural equipment and tools of traditional crafts such as weaving and carving. Two special exhibitions a year take up customs, history or regional art.
