About the museum
The Stadtmuseum Geisa tells the story of the Rhön town, first documented in 817, which set out on a new beginning after reunification. It is part of the ANNELIESE DESCHAUER Galerie, a cube-shaped building on Schloßplatz that Werner and Anneliese Deschauer handed over to the town of Geisa in 2018. The former local history museum "Geisaer Amt" and the Border Museum were housed in the neighboring castle after the Wende (German reunification). Since 2011 the castle has been used as the Point Alpha Akademie.
The upper-floor exhibition is divided into two parts. Under the title "Lebensgeschichten" (Life Stories), personalities of Geisa are presented: in the "Roten Bereich" (red section), internationally significant figures such as the polymath Athanasius Kircher, the pharmacist Adalbert Geheeb and the botanist Moritz Goldschmidt; in the "Blauen Bereich" (blue section), politicians, entrepreneurs, craftsmen and industrialists who shaped the town's appearance. The second part traces the history of Geisa and the Geisaer Amt from the Celts to the present, with exhibits such as a replica of the Celtic beaked flagon from the Borscher Aue, a town model showing the medieval fortifications, and a papal order belonging to the donor couple. Media terminals deepen the themes.
On the ground floor the gallery shows paintings and sculptures from the Anneliese Deschauer collection, including works by Marc Chagall, Gabriele Münter and Salvador Dalí.
